Guide for businesses Website or online store: which one your business needs
If you are deciding between a website or online store, start with one question: what do you want your customer to do when they finish looking? They can message you, order on WhatsApp, book an appointment or pay online, and each answer leads to a different kind of website.

First, the question that decides everything
When someone wants a website, they almost always start with the design or the price. However, the important decision is a different one: what has to happen when a customer lands on your page. That is why a site that presents your business, one that takes bookings and one that charges online are built, maintained and measured differently.
We are an agency, so take this with that context in mind. That is exactly why, when we mention rules from Google, WhatsApp or the law, we link to the official source so you can check it yourself.
To choose between a website or online store, think about what your customer does at the end. If they message or call you, an informational website is enough. When they pick products but need to talk to you before buying, a catalog with orders on WhatsApp. If they book, a website with bookings. On the other hand, if they can buy on their own and pay online, an online store. Also, a store requires inventory, shipping and following the rules for selling online.
Five types of websites and when each one fits
None is better than another in the abstract. What changes is what your customer does and how much work you can sustain after launch.
Informational or corporate website
It presents your business, your services and how to reach you, across several pages that Google can show separately. That is why it is the foundation for professional services, B2B companies and businesses that quote each job.
Fits if: your customer messages you, calls you or asks for a quote.
Watch out: without a clear contact button, it is just a brochure online.
Landing page
A single page with a single goal, built for a campaign or one specific service. As a result, it loads fast, does not distract and is easy to measure.
Fits if: you will run ads on Google or Meta and want to test an offer.
Watch out: because it is one page, it falls short for showing up on Google for many different searches.
Catalog with orders on WhatsApp
It shows your products with photos, descriptions and prices, and the order is closed in a conversation. In fact, the WhatsApp Business app already lets you show products, set prices and share them with your customers.
Fits if: you have few products, the price depends on the case or your customer needs to ask before buying.
Watch out: every sale depends on someone replying on time.
Website with bookings or appointments
Besides presenting your business, it lets customers pick a date and time without messaging you. You can also connect your booking system to your Business Profile, since Google allows it through a supported provider.
Fits if: you live on appointments, tables or rooms, as in health, beauty, restaurants or hotels.
Watch out: the calendar has to stay up to date, because a booking on a taken slot annoys more than having no bookings at all.
Online store
It has a catalog, a cart and online payment, so customers can buy on their own at any hour. Also, if you connect your products to Google Merchant Center, they can appear for free on Search, Maps, YouTube and Gemini, although Google clarifies that this does not guarantee they will be shown.
Fits if: you have several products with a fixed price, you can ship them and you want to sell even when you are not on the chat.
Watch out: it requires up-to-date inventory, shipping, a payment gateway and following the rules for selling online.
Website or online store, point by point
If you are torn between the two, compare them this way. In this case, the website column also covers the catalog with orders on WhatsApp.
| What to check | Website | Online store |
|---|---|---|
| What your customer does | Messages you, calls you or orders by chat. | Buys and pays without talking to you. |
| Who closes the sale | You or your team, in the conversation. | The store, while you prepare and ship the order. |
| How you get paid | Bank transfer, payment link or in person. | A payment gateway connected to the store. |
| Products and prices | Few products or prices that depend on the case. | A catalog with fixed prices and up-to-date inventory. |
| Rules in the US | The same as any business that advertises its services. | Also the rules for shipping times, delays and refunds. |
| Work after launch | Updating text and photos, and answering messages. | Also adding products, changing prices and shipping orders. |
If you sell online in the US, keep these rules in mind
An online store is not just a design with a cart. So, before you ask for one, it helps to know that federal rules set expectations for anyone who sells and ships online, including the following.
- Shipping times you can meet. If you state a shipping time, you need a reasonable basis to meet it. If you state none, you must be able to ship within 30 days.
- Delays, consent and refunds. If you cannot ship on time, you have to tell the customer, give a new date and get their consent to the delay, or refund the money for what you did not ship.
- An accessible website. The Department of Justice holds that the ADA applies to the goods and services that businesses open to the public offer on the web, so your store should work for people with disabilities.
- Sales tax. The rules depend on each state where you sell, so ask your accountant before you set prices and checkout.

Six questions to choose your website or online store
Answer them before you request quotes. That way, any agency can propose what you really need, and you can compare similar proposals.
- Do you sell products, services or both?
- How many products do you have, and how often do their prices change?
- Is your price fixed, or does it depend on each customer?
- Who will answer messages, and during what hours?
- Can you take payments online and ship to other cities or states?
- Who will update the website when something changes?
How we decide
At ScaleUp Agency, a digital marketing agency, we would rather you start with the website you can sustain today and grow it later. An abandoned online store, with old prices and sold-out products, drives away more customers than a well-built informational website with a WhatsApp button.
If your customer needs to talk to you before buying, start with an informational website or a catalog with WhatsApp. On the other hand, if they can buy on their own, what you need is an online store.
Three mistakes worth avoiding
- Asking for an online store for a few products whose prices change by customer, because a catalog with WhatsApp usually works better there.
- Asking for “a website” without deciding what the visitor should do, since that makes it impossible to know whether it worked.
- Launching a store without deciding who updates the inventory and who ships the orders.
If you want real examples, GM Nexus Group is a corporate site in English, Spanish and Portuguese, while MyBShop and Vida Natural Plus are WooCommerce stores in Spanish where you can buy. And if you still do not know where to start, take our free 2-minute marketing assessment.
Frequently asked questions about a website or online store
Which is better, a website or an online store?
Neither is better by itself, because it depends on how your customer buys. If they need to talk to you before deciding, a website with WhatsApp works for you. On the other hand, if they can choose and pay on their own, an online store sells for you at any hour.
Can I sell with just the WhatsApp Business catalog?
Yes, to start it can work very well, especially with few products. However, every sale depends on someone replying, and the catalog lives inside WhatsApp, so it does not help you get found on Google the way your own website does.
Can I start with a website and turn it into an online store later?
Yes, if you build it on a platform that allows it. For example, a WordPress website can add WooCommerce later without starting from scratch. That is why it pays to think about it before you choose the platform.
Is a landing page enough for my business?
For a campaign or a single service, yes. Even so, because it is one page, it falls short for showing up on Google for many different searches, so most businesses pair it with an informational website.
What do I need to sell online in the US?
Besides the store, you need a payment gateway, shipping times you can actually meet, a plan for delays and refunds, a website people with disabilities can use and clear sales tax rules for the states where you sell. The FTC and the Department of Justice explain the federal part in their official guides.
